Please visit our new website at www.nysml.com. The content of www.nysml.org is in the process of being transfered there.
Here are the final standings from the NYSML 2009 competition.
Here are two documents that each team will want to download and print out and bring to NYSML 2009. The first is the revised score sheet and the second is the revised Proctor's Manual.
Important Changes for NYSML 2009
The NYSML Board has decided on some changes in the contest that will directly impact you, and we wanted to let you know them as
soon as possible. We trust that this will give you enough time to plan and to practice accordingly.
1) There will be no calculator use in any part of the contest.
In previous years, we have allowed calculators on the Power and Team Questions. However, beginning with the 2009 contest, NYSML
will be a calculator-free zone. By the way, this brings us in line with ARML, who has also made this change for 2009.
2) The number of individual questions has been increased from 8 to 10.
Again, this brings us in line with ARML. The intention here is to provide a greater gradation in difficulty of questions; the
first set should be straightforward, while the later questions should challenge everyone. We, as a board, also hope to avoid the “Boy am I glad they asked number theory instead of solid geometry” factor in determining a winner.
3) The number of points for the Power, Team, and Relay Rounds has been increased to 50 each.
It was our desire to make the number of points from individual competition equal to the number of points from team competition. Since there will be a potential 150 points from individual competition, and since I can’t do anything beyond simple arithmetic, we
made Power, Team, and Relay Rounds worth 50 apiece. I don’t think ARML made an analogous change, but we don’t have to do
everything like they do, right?
For those people preparing their scorecards, it will mean that the 10 team questions will be 5 points apiece, and that relays will
be worth 5 points on the 3-minute mark and 3 points on the 6-minute mark.
I believe those are the major changes to report to you. If my Board reminds me of anything else, I’ll send it your way post-haste. If you have any concerns, I can always be reached by e-mail; please feel free to do so.
I’ll see you in two months. It’s going to be a blast!
